Bubblechug: Tiny Pines Raceway
Creator: Peter Newman
Bubblechug is a racing game for 1 or two players, done in The Games Factory.
In the version being reviewed here, you drive your car around one track against
another player or a computer opponent. The computer opponent has several skill levels,
and you choose the number of laps.
The track is populated by little people
that you can run over and splat all over the road.
This is done very well (see screenshot - the blood is different every time!),
and all the options screens show similar polish and good design.
Even the customary animations at the start
that won't let you forget Peter Newman (that's the guy who made the game,
Peter Newman) are very classy. The graphics of the cars do a good job of
hiding the fact that the game is top-down rather than isometric or 3D (This
is a limitation of The Games Factory).
However, the computer opponent has much better cornering than you, and the
cars decelerate rapidly if you don't keep your finger on the gas. Your car will
go very slowly as the course is narrow and tight, and Peter Newman seems to
have emphasised the 'chug' aspect of this game. Overall, a nice looking game
in which you get to splat pedestrians, but a bit more of a trundler than a racer.
