Tribute to Klik & Play
I've had Klik & Play for many years now, and have made a bunch of
games with it and had a lot of fun. So I've put together this little
tribute to show that the program has a special place in my heart..
I'll start with my Crash Collection.
I've got crashes from several operating systems! Take a look:
Windows 3.11:
This shows an error I had while saving a game. Let it be a lesson: always have plenty of free hard drive space over and above that needed for the game!
Windows 95/98:
Standard crash:
Not enough memory #1:
(this error I got when trying to reverse the directions of an animation. I just had too much stuff in that level and not enough system resources)
Not enough memory #2:
(this error I got trying to play a big level without having restarted my computer recently enough.. all I had open was the CD player)
Here's an evil error: Write Error!
If you see this error, it's not good. Any changes you have made to your game have probably just been undone. If you get the error when saving, you should restart, free up hard drive space, and check that backup thoroughly to make sure everything loads OK.
If you ever see the equally descriptive relative of this error,
Read Error:

then your blood should turn to ice, for you are doomed. Your game is corrupted (something is wrong with the game's .img file, say. Levels won't load, and you cannot recover any of the graphics). All you can do with a game in this state is put the salvageable parts (here this would be sound effects and music) into another K&P game then delete what's left. You'd better have been making plenty of backups.. This happened to me on Space Wasters 3, which is why there is no fourth level. I couldn't face remaking it all.
I hear, though, that the kind and knowledgable people at Clickteam will take corrupted games and attempt to restore them.
Windows NT:
Standard crash:
I now move on to my Display Problems section.
Again, I've got a whole range..
This next one was captured with one of the video cards I have that Klik & Play doesn't agree with. If I set Klik & Play to 32768 colour mode (available when Windows is set to 16-bit colour), I got results like this:
(Everything still works, though, and in the animation editor all the colours are correct.)
If I set Windows to 32-bit colour and used Klik & Play's colour mode, I could end up with
even more weird and wonderful stuff:
Here's a jumbly mess typical of the ones K&P would give me on days when it got out of the
wrong side of the CD case in the morning:
(Some of it looks like the Level Editor, some of it the Storyboard Editor, some of it my Windows wallpaper, and I don't even know where some of it came from..)
Here's a screenshot sent to me by a friend who lives in Wales. On his computer, Klik & Play doesn't like running in certain screen sizes (this is the result):
(just try and play that game!)
This picture was submitted by someone else on the internet whose name I have forgotten, but the image is interesting. 'Level Editor meets martian terrain':
The last display problem I've only had once. For some reason, all the non-platform backdrop objects in my level have shifted down and to the right, wrapping around the screen. The active objects and platforms stayed in their normal places - very confusing to play!
Here's one more for luck.
